ELI5: Why does helium make your voice sound high pitched?
Sound travels about three times faster through helium than through normal air. That does not change the actual vibration rate of your vocal cords, but it does raise the resonant frequencies of your vocal tract, which is what gives the sound its pitch and tone. So your voice actually still has the same fundamental pitch, it just resonates differently, which is why it sounds so much higher and thinner to our ears.
